Week 12 Blog Post
I like the quote in Boulds writing which states “And by presenting racism as an insanity that burned itself out, or as the obvious folly of the ignorant and impoverished who would be left behind by the genre’s brave new futures, sf avoids confronting the structures of racism and its own complicity in them” (Bould, 180) This quote shares that the black community is still not getting a fair chance at equality and to tell their side of the story. Even in many popular movies the protagonist is usually white. It is 2020 and there still are not very many movies with a black protagonist. People are still not seeing that there is still a problem today with racism. A lot of people are still ignoring issues. It is not them that is going through the problems that are still happening today. Just because it is not happening to them and they cannot see what is still happening makes then very ignorant to the issue. Sf does not want to acknowledge what is happening as they are trying to make this a color-blind future. This causes more problems and makes it even worse because by making it color blind we are still not addressing or even fixing the issues that stand right before us. People think that it is “respectful” to other races when it is still just as bad. It is basically just saying that it will things will be more equal when we should not even have to do that in the first place. People are still resisting the changes that are coming about by people being more vocal about the unjustness and like Boulds said we should be embracing this change instead of resisting it. In these sf movies they are not acknowledging characters in the movies such as the native girl who is cleaning the ship. She is ignored through the whole movie and it is known to the audience that she is a minor character. This almost sends a message to the audience that she does not matter and that they do not need her in the movie. This is why Afrofuturism is so important because it addresses black experiences and the concerns that we need to start worrying about right now so that we ca change the future for the better. This will help people to see things from a different perspective instead from just the white perspective. This can help make for a more productive future. We need more perspectives for more knowledge to be created. As Butler has said, we need to keep going over history until it has been “adequately resolved.” We need to not only look at one side of history, but we need to be educated on all of the sides of history.
